Oh Olema campground how we love and hate you. Due to this location we have stayed in the Olema campground four times! Let’s start with why we love Olema campground…
Firstly, It has been the best option for us when we need to be near San Francisco, which is about a 45 min drive without the rig. They have full as well as partial hookups, a dump station that is clean which is a serious plus as we have learned the hard way. Just so/so wifi working from there was a struggle, even with the booster. Nice laundry area, and USPS onsite if you need a delivery pick up location during your travels. I never checked out the bathrooms, Carlos gave them one thumb up. (he’s visited worse)
If you are looking for an area near Point Reyes National Seashore this is hands down the best campground. (currently any camping in the national seashore is closed) It is located right at the entrance of the park, we always head over the hills to the beach for sunset walks, you’ll find elephant seals often are napping along the beach posing. The trail options in Point Reyes are endless and beaUtiful! Check out the website, the list is long and if you’re familiar with Carlos and I it won’t surprise you to know we have hiked most of them. If you’re looking for a full day hike check out Alamere falls, it is always fun to have a reward on a 13 mile hike. This one has a waterfall right on the beach.
Just a 5 minute drive down the road you’ll find the cute town of Point Reyes. This area is famous for cheese, and the home to Cowgirl Creamery they have anything you may need for your picnic along the coast or hikes into the hills. The cheeses are delicious, when staying in this area I am usually posting a picture of one the beautiful cheese boards Carlos has put together. For groceries stop by the Palace market or Toby’s Feed Barn both full of fresh local products including some pretty good wines.
Okay, I have to give you the full deets about Olema campground, in addition to the positive mentions above. The management is sketchy, there I said it. Now, the people at the front desk, answering phones are lovely. And helpful. The manager though, she’s someone you definitely wouldn’t want to meet in a dark parking lot. There are a pair of guys / family members who drive in circles around the grounds uncomfortably close to your site and nonstop. Alllll day long, we were working from the rig and found it strange. The sites are pretty, but if there is rain all of the dirt roads are a muddy mess. As Carlos truly hates mud and there had been a storm the previous day, it was a bit of a bummer when we had to drive through 6 inches of mud in all directions. All that said and none of this would keep us from staying here again, if in the area we will always stay at Olema campgrounds. It’s like an old torn sweater, it’s comfortable.
