Big Sur Campground & Cabins

What a dreamy location this was for our first stop as official full timers! Living in northern California for years we’ve driven along this coastline many times, without having stayed in Big Sur. This campground was open to essential workers and people living full time in their rv when we visited, which meant as an added bonus we shared the entire campground with only three other rigs. Our site was located along the stream, which was nice to hear as we fell asleep, and had partial hookups (electric and water). As we wandered the grounds I did not see a bad spot, anywhere you parked would be beautiful.  Although, if there is any rain it becomes muddy and won’t dry out with those huge redwoods blocking the sunshine. The employees were all helpful and friendly giving us the opportunity to change sites if needed.

While in Big Sur a visit to the famous Big Sur bakery is a no brainer. There are plenty of great places to sit outside on the deck and soak in the sunshine while enjoying an espresso drink with your morning pastry. Everything we tried was delicious, we purchased both sweet and savory croissants (makes my mouth water just thinking about them) and I took a few cookies for the road. We never got a chance to come back in for the wood fired pizza, but their woodfired oven and options sounded wonderful. They serve beer and wine as well and evening under the redwoods with pizza and glass of wine? Yes please!  We cooked dinner at our campsite each night, and like to grab ingredients as needed when we know we will be in an area where fresh options are possible.  One afternoon we took a drive down the beautiful HWY 1 into Monterey for fresh fish at Sea Harvest (598 Foam St, Monterey, CA 93940). They have a super fresh selection of fish and shellfish, we purchased a beautiful piece of salmon for Carlos to cook over the fire (It was Ahhmazing). They also serve some of the best fish and chips in the area.

There are so many trails in the area, do a little research and find one that fits your timeline and skill level. Here is the terrific list I used from the chamber of commerce. Pfeiffer falls was an easy walk, but very busy even with most of the trail closed people flock here to take photos from afar of the waterfall. Hiking out to the pfeiffer beach was really beautiful, pack up lunch and plan to stay a while. Plenty of photo ops along the rocks and places to lounge for the day taking in the sunshine.
